Great Books for 2nd Graders
Read Aloud Books
Although 2nd graders are becoming independent readers and often prefer to read silently, there are still great benefits to listening to reading and I encourage all parents to keep reading aloud to your children as long as they will let you!
I start out each year reading nearly all the Chris Van Allsburg books, saving a few for the holidays, like the Widow's Broom for Halloween and The Polar Express for Christmas. Then I move into reading longer books over a period of days and sometimes weeks which I read during handwriting or while the students eat their snacks.
Stone Fox is one of my favorites. Each chapter is short and offers perfect cliff hangers. We read this when we are studying Native Americans as it naturally opens up the conversation about Native Americans losing their land and being forced to live on reservations. Another favorite of mine is Muggie Maggie which we read when we start learning cursive in January...and I read it while they are practicing their cursive! Other than those two I vary the read alouds from year to year.
Check out these books recommended by 2nd grade teachers and homeschoolers. Although I have read almost all of them there are only a few I have used as read alouds and I can't wait to try out something new. The covers may be enough for you, but click on the pictures to go to reviews of the individual stories.

Book Series
Second grade is a great age to get students hooked on reading. Finding a book series that your child loves makes it easier to get that next book in their hands.
Kids Book Series is a data base that allows searching by age and grade level. The advanced search feature allows keyword, title, author, and them searches.
At the top of my list would have to be The Magic Tree House series and Secrets of Droon. Check out these other recommendations below. I also included a list for 3rd grade as many advanced 2nd grade readers are ready for these.
Books I have not yet read, but are on my list to read based on reviews and recommendations
