Today was Valentine's Day. Students delivered Valentines to the bags they decorated yesterday and then got started on a Heart Art STEAM activity. Students found the first level, simply making the heart using 20 triangles, a challenge. Once they got that down pat, they had no trouble arranging the triangles so that no 2 aligning sides had matching colors.
The original idea for this STEAMtivity came from the Handmade Kids Art website. Like this blogger suggested, I only gave the students the template if they needed it. Everyone created the hearts on black paper without template help! Instead of copying the triangles page and cutting out all those triangles, I cut 2 X 2 pieces of paper and then cut those into fourths.
For our Valentine party we built ice cream sundaes with all the toppings and opened up our Valentine bags. Finally we ended the day with games and dancing to Just Dance Despicable Me.
Today was the first day of Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) week. We kicked it off with everyone wearing their favorite hat for a Hats off to Kindness Celebration.
Next, during quiet time, we put together 100 piece puzzles!
Then, during math, we strung 100 beads onto lanyards. We will use these to practice addition and subtraction problems to 100 throughout the year. We also started on a 100 Seconds activity with our paper basket toss. Gabe made the most baskets with 123 baskets in 100 seconds! Students could also choose to work on an odd/even puzzle sheet which revealed the number 100 when completed.
Today we played a strategy game called Block and Cover with our LEGO LearntoLearn sets. This is one of those "easy to learn, hard to master" games. Students each used one color of building blocks and took turns placing the blocks on the board with the only requirement that it must touch another of their pieces in some way. In the end, the one with the most "dots" showing won. At the end of each round winners played winners and losers played losers. Kids loved it!
Students were asked only to do something different each session to allow everyone to get a chance to play with the most popular games. What was the most popular activity? Crawling through the mazes they made with the blankets and sheets Mrs. Huneycutt brought!
To conclude our unit on magnets, we created Paper Plate Magnet Mazes. We started with our wand magnets to move the object through the maze from the bottom of the paper plate and challenged each other to complete each others mazes. The kids loved these so much and wanted to take them home, so I found button magnets to take home, which worked as well as the wand magnets.
We got the idea from this Cakies website. Instead of a protractor we made 5 circle templates. A parent helper traced the circle templates on the paper plates. The students then erased random openings and added stops. Then they designed a center and object to go through the maze and taped a paperclip to the back of the object.
Today's STEM challenge was to build a wheelchair from the LEGO LearnToLearn sets. Students were given the choice to work in pairs or by themselves to make a wheelchair that would be fast, safe, look interesting and fun for a fictitious new girl to school named Maggie, that has used a wheelchair all her life. Students also had the option to include a place for Maggie's backpack. This is my favorite lesson activity from the LEGO LearnToLearn curriculum pack. I am sure if Maggie was real she would love any of these designs!
