For a short STEM time today, students explored shapes, colors, patterns and symmetry by creating flat or 3D structures from their LEGO LearnToLearn kits. Here are a few of their designs.
Today students presented their data projects. After coming up with a survey question, students polled the students. Then they had to figure out what categories to sort their data by in order to present their date the best way. Today the students presented to the class their findings.
Today Ms. Huneycutt greeted us NOT through a Morning Message, but with a talking avatar of a dog! Then we got to try out this Text-to-Speech tool at SitePal. It was so cool! Each student made their own avatar and wrote something about themselves. Then they selected a voice, and changed the pitch and speed of the voice. Check out our creations on our Digital Learning Day page!
Then students visited the NetSmartzKids page and in pairs played Router's Birthday Surprise, an interactive adventure that teaches students about internet and personal safety. After earning 5 badges, students earned their NetSmartz certificate.
To cap of Kindness Week students were invited to be crazy kind with crazy hair.
Today was our second field trip of the year was to Amazement Square in Lynchburg and it was truly AMAZING! Our kids were so psyched to go after we completed a WebQuest yesterday in class so they could narrow down their free choice exploration time to the things they really wanted to do. We were guided through the Native American exhibit, explored the many hands-on exhibits, and had free time playing on the 4+ story climbing tower. So cool!
Today was Valentine's Day. Students delivered Valentines to the bags they decorated yesterday and then got started on a Heart Art STEAM activity. Students found the first level, simply making the heart using 20 triangles, a challenge. Once they got that down pat, they had no trouble arranging the triangles so that no 2 aligning sides had matching colors.
The original idea for this STEAMtivity came from the Handmade Kids Art website. Like this blogger suggested, I only gave the students the template if they needed it. Everyone created the hearts on black paper without template help! Instead of copying the triangles page and cutting out all those triangles, I cut 2 X 2 pieces of paper and then cut those into fourths.
For our Valentine party we built ice cream sundaes with all the toppings and opened up our Valentine bags. Finally we ended the day with games and dancing to Just Dance Despicable Me.
Today was the first day of Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) week. We kicked it off with everyone wearing their favorite hat for a Hats off to Kindness Celebration.
Next, during quiet time, we put together 100 piece puzzles!
Then, during math, we strung 100 beads onto lanyards. We will use these to practice addition and subtraction problems to 100 throughout the year. We also started on a 100 Seconds activity with our paper basket toss. Gabe made the most baskets with 123 baskets in 100 seconds! Students could also choose to work on an odd/even puzzle sheet which revealed the number 100 when completed.
