Today was our first field trip of the year! We traveled to Richmond to the Lewis Ginter Bonical Gardens. During our guided tour of the Children's Garden, Plants, What Good Are They?, we got to smell, taste, plant, and collect all kinds of plants. Then after lunch outdoors, we toured some of the other gardens and made our way to the conservatory for the Butterflies Alive exhibit. We especially loved the Wild Art Creation Stations! Thanks to our parent chaperones for keeping us safe and having fun with us!
Today was International Talk Like a Pirate Day! To get us in the mood, we read How I Became a Pirate, by Melinda Long. All day long we heard Ms. Laine, the PE teacher, yelling out commands in Pirate. But, we didn't have PE today! No worries, Ms. Laine came down during our extra recess time and drilled the class as her pirate crew. We saluted, scrubbed the deck, took a dive, and walked the plank! What fun!.
Check our a video version of How I Became A Pirate here.
Today was International Dot Day! First we watched the animated version of The Dot, by Peter Reynolds. The we sang the Dot Song without motions and with motions. Then we did some coffee filter and marker dot creations! This was the first year I tried this with a class and it was so much fun! Each child did 2, and we "broke the rules" of this instructional video for the second one and used the brown, black, and grey she said not to use! These came out so cool, too!
Finally, during STEM time, we looked through The Dot again to study the watercolor illustrations before breaking out our BRAND NEW watercolor sets and making our own dot pictures.
All this week we have been sharing our Baby Memories, some object or a story from birth to kindergarten. It was so much fun to hear the student stories about "when I was little!"
Yesterday was Grandparents Day and today we celebrated by inviting grandparents to lunch. We had quite a few to join us, and some that found they were quickly adopted as grandparents to others. Couldn't make it this week? Parents and grandparents are invited to lunch with their child any day. Please join us!
All this week students shared their Summer Souvenirs at Morning Meeting. We learned how to ask good questions to learn more from our speakers. The students all seem so relaxed speaking in front of their classmates and we learned something new about every student.
