This LEGO Learn2Learn lesson challenged students to build a tower as tall as possible that would withstand some shaking without falling down. While some students went straight for the style points rather than reaching for the sky, others improved their model several times to get the tall points! Congrats to Beatrice who ended up with the highest tower of all.
Today was Hat Day as part of our ABC Countdown. Students were invited to wear any kind of hat...sports hats, youth team hat, silly hat, fun hat. Check them out!
Today was G-Game Day and students were invited to bring in a board game to share with the class. We also played Plus 9 or 10 Bingo in math. I was impressed at how well students were able to explain the rules when teaching their classmates their games! Here are just a few of the games they played.
Today was F-Favorite Book Day, one of our fun activities that is a part of our ABC Countdown. All students were asked to bring in their favorite book to share with the class. At Morning Meeting each student introduced themselves, showed and told the name of their book, then explained why it was their favorite book or book series. I was amazed at how well the students explained unique elements of their book without giving everything away. At the end, when I asked, "Now how many of you now want to read one of these books you heard about?" nearly everyone raised their hand! What a great activity.
Today was D-Day....Dig and Get Dirty Day as part of our ABC Countdown. All second graders paired up to plant a perennial in one of the school gardens. This is the second time this year we have planted perennials. Check out the rain garden habitat, the raised bed outside the 2nd grade classrooms, and the butterfly garden to see the new plants! Thanks to Mr. Mitchell for helping us dig the holes for our plants.
The plants were paid for by several grants we have received over the last few years and our funds are slowly dwindling. If you would like to make a contribution to our habitat fund you can write a check to Crozet Elementary and in the notes section write Habitat Activity Fund and drop it by the office.
Friday was B-Bubbles Day for our ABC Countdown to the end of the year. Students had the rare opportunity to chew bubblegum and attempt to blow bubbles as part of a sensory writing activity. But since we had a late opening due to a flood warning, we finished up our activities today with this Bubble Fun math activity. It included measuring, averaging using the calculator, and just some good-old fun.
Today my family and I checked out Wildrock Park, a new park right here in Crozet. It was so cool! The 28-acre “playscape,” hiking and camping area is a beautiful 20 minute drive from the center of town out Blackwell Hollows Road. There is so much to do here. I think this would be an awesome field trip for our nature-loving 2nd graders....too late for a field trip there this year, but thought you parents might want to know about it for an excursion this summer. Public Days are each Saturday. Check out the online registration at their website.
Today began the first day of our ABC Countdown! This is the 2nd grade teachers' way to make the last 26 days of school fun and engaging! Check out the file like to see all the fun things we have planned.
For A-Animal Day, students were invited to bring in a stuffed animal. We also made a trip to Zeus Theaters to see the film, Born in China. This Disney Nature film followed several families of animals from the vast remote areas of China for an entire year. The cinematography was amazing! The students enjoyed the whole popcorn and drink experience as well!
Look what this caring student shared about her weekend! She chopped off some 12 inches to donate to an organization who makes wigs for cancer patients. This is the second time she has done this. The last time was in Kindergarten...and she has been growing her hair with this in mind ever since. How wonderful is that!
